Barbara came for a two-week meditation course in 1998. The course ended. She did not leave. Twenty-something years later she is part of the village connective tissue - translator, plant-keeper, informal historian.
Her field notes, kept in a stack of paper diaries, record the village season by season: which cafe opened, which trail washed out, who got married, who finally went home.
Ask her why she stayed and she gives the least romantic answer possible: the vegetables, the neighbours, and the way the fog comes up the valley at four.
“I stopped counting years when the shopkeepers started counting them for me.”
